TORONTO FC LIKELY TO MISS OUT OF CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TILL 2018

If the speculations in the media over the past months are anything to go by, MLS side will not return to the CONCACAF Champions league until 2018.

According to Kurtis Larsin of the sun, the Canadian side is not expecting to feature in the continental show-piece despite qualifying as winners of the Canadian Championship. From reasons gathered, this is due to upcoming changes to the tournament’s format. “TFC qualified for the 2017-18 CCL by the way of winning last year’s Canadian Championship. But the incoming changes will see the 2017-18 edition of the tourney begin next February instead of this summer.

Furthermore, all five MLS qualifiers are expected to bypass the CCL group stage into a 16-team knockout tournament. The aim of the format is believed to fit each edition of the competition proper into a calendar year. Currently- much like UEFA Champion’s league- the group stage is played from August to September before the knockout stages begin in February, with the final taking place very early in the MLS season.” (more…)

IBRAHIMOVIC IN POSSIBLE MOVE TO MLS

Manchester United’s striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has put forward the possibility of moving over to the Major League Soccer and believes he can also see himself conquering the United States.

Ibrahimovic had moved to United from Paris St. Germain after a wonderful time with the team. He won four Ligue 1 trophies, scoring 156 goals in a total of 180 appearances. He has also won a number of league titles with Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

The 35-year old, who has been linked with a move to MLS in the past, is quite open to heading into new grounds and possibly conquering. Speaking to the daily newspapers, Aftonbladet, Ibrahimovic had said,

“It’s a huge option for me. For the football and everything else. I can see myself conquering the US as I have with Europe. Lots of people stay in one place throughout their career, but I’ve travelled around like Napoleon, and conquered every new country where I’ve set foot. So perhaps I should do what Napoleon didn’t and cross the Atlantic and conquer the States as well.”

Ibrahimovic will be honored with a statue in Stockholm, just outside the Friends Arena Stadium, after having won the Swedish Golden Ball award on Monday, making it the 11th win for the Swede so far.

The striker, who is also Sweden’s all-time top goal scorer also spoke on his move in the past from PSG to Manchester United and he insists that he does not regret the move which had been signed as a one year deal, but with an option to continue for 12 more months.

Ibrahimovic, earlier in June after the Euro 2016, had put an end to his international career which had seen him come off with a 116-cap in which he scored a total of 62 goals.

Who Could Atlanta Sign Before Joining the MLS in 2017?

Atlanta United are the newest MLS expansion team on the scene and they are set to join the United States’ primary soccer league for the beginning of the 2017 season. While their new stadium may not be ready to host Major League Soccer games until the second half of the campaign, Atlanta have been granted permission to play their first round of home fixtures at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium – and fans across the state are excited to welcome an MLS franchise to the area.

As you will probably know, MLS franchises are allowed to sign designated players who are exclusive to their salary cap for the rest of the squad. These tend to be high-profile names who come over from the Premier League; Robbie Keane, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard to name a few. With that in mind, we consider a few potential candidates who could choose to join up with Atlanta ahead of the upcoming season – and there are certainly a number of seasoned professionals that make the list. While we cannot guarantee that these targets will sign for Atlanta, ALL would relish the opportunity to play in front of the passionate MLS fans. (more…)

The future of the MLS depends on the development of players

According to the CEO of Arsenal Ivan Gazidis, the future of the American League will in a big part depend on how much can their players develop in the next few years. Ever since 1994, Gazidis has been taking part of the management team of the MLS and in 2001 Gazidis became the deputy commissioner of the league.

In the past few years, the MLS has been experiencing a huge growth with more renowned stars deciding to join the league and it’s turning into an attracting league that can offer players a different environment to play which is completely different in comparison to the traditional European Leagues.

After having worked closely in the MLS, Ivan Gazidis has talked about this recent growth of the American League and what he believes is needed so that it can continue expanding and gain more prominence.

“The globalization of the world and the increasingly multicultural diverse population of the U.S., all of these things created a really fertile ground for soccer to grow. We’re seeing that in every single way that you can imagine. Soccer in the U.S. is now absolutely a part of the global conversation, it’s also a part of the sports conversation in the U.S., and it’s also a part of the cultural part of the conversation in the U.S.” Arsenal’s Ivan Gazidis said.
