Estrada shines on loan in Atlanta

Seattle Sounders forward David Estrada has admitted he thoroughly enjoyed his time on loan with second division side Atlanta Silverbacks. After struggling for game time with the Sounders, Estrada was sent on a month-loan deal to the Silverbacks, helping the Atlanta-based team to three straight victories and claiming a number of plaudits for his work-rate during his brief time in Atlanta.

The loan deal appears to have worked out well for all parties. While Atlanta were able to select a proven MLS player capable of leading by example both in training and in matches, the Sounders were able to give Estrada some meaningful playing time after slipping down the pecking order at a Seattle team tipped by many Betfair to be in with a great chance of winning this season’s MLS. NO CHOICE AT LEFT BACK

Seattle Sounders manager Sigi Schmid was recently left with a major choice to make after his left back Dylan Remick suffered an injury during the match against Philadelphia Union. The manager was left with only two options, but he needed to get the team back after conceding goals in the first half.

Hence, he was left with no alternative but to make an attacking change by putting midfielder Brad Evans in this position. This substitution was a treat after the midfielder contributed heavily from this position. (more…)

DROGBA HEADING TO US

The New York Red Bulls and The LA Galaxy both are interested in signing Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard from Galatasaray and Chelsea respectively.

The Ivorian forward Drogba is out of contract at the end of the season just like Lampard but Galatasaray is still debating on whether or not to extend his contract which gives the MLS clubs a chance to step in sign both players.

Thierry Henry has already stated that he would welcome Drogba with open arms to the New York Red Bulls and the arrival of the 36 years old former Chelsea would certainly boost the attacking department of the mls club but the question remains if Galatarasaray will be extending his contract.

Ashley Cole is another player who will be out of contract by the end of the season and this has sparked interest from a number of clubs around the world that are interested in signing the defender from Chelsea as it is highly unlikely that the English defender will be staying in Stamford Bridge for another season.

LA Galaxy is believed to be preparing a contract offer of £4million in order to lure Lampard away from Chelsea and if he does decide to finish the last few years of his career playing in the mls, this would see him having a huge pay raise from what he is currently earning in Chelsea in the Premier League with a club that the English midfielder will not have to play at such a high and competitive level.

The possibility of bigger names arriving to the mls is open as David Beckham’s new Miami team will have surely have him signing high profile players that can guaranteed success when his club starts to get moving in the next few years.

STRENGTHENED

Toronto FC has tried to strengthen its defence by signing the American left back Justin Morrow.

The 26 years old player was a part of San Jose Earthquakes until the last season. He spent 4 years there and featured for them in more than 70 league games.

Toronto FC had put up awful performances in the Major League soccer last season and they don’t want the next season to go on a similar pattern. That’s why; they are looking to add utility players to their squad.

Announcing the arrival of Morrow at BMO Field, one of the higher officials of Toronto FC, Tim Bezbatchenko said, “Morrow is a hugely talented and versatile young player. He has got quite a bit of experience of playing in the Major League Soccer as well. So, I think he will prove to be a good signing for us.”

One of the main reasons behind Toronto’s poor performances last season was their fragile defence. They conceded way too many goals. So, it was clear that they needed a player who can keep things steady at the back and perhaps, they have managed to find one such guy in Morrow.

Morrow hadn’t actually started his career as a defender. He used to be an attacking midfielder for his youth club Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but, he didn’t have much success playing at that position. When he came to San Jose, he decided to start playing in a defensive role and it seems he has been benefitted by that decision. He has been playing far better as a defender.

It would be interesting to see if the manager of Toronto FC, Ryan Nelsen, uses Morrow as a left back or in some other defensive position in the next season.
